We are with excitement as we work to center joy in graduate education and to re-imagine the graduate programs in African American and African Studies (AAAS) at MSU!
The graduate programs in AAAS offer exclusive advanced study in Black Feminisms, Genders, and Sexualities Studies. Students will work with vanguard artist-scholars who are committed to forwarding the power and scope of Black lives, worlds, and world building. The graduate programs have three concentrations of study: Black Cultures and Institutions, Black Girlhood Studies, and Black Speculative Ecologies. We support learners as knowledge producers and community builders who can show up wholly and authentically in their respective intellectual leadership journeys. The graduate programs in AAAS are guided and informed by the values of Collectivity, Wellness, Play, Desire, and Love.
We will begin accepting applications for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy degree program in the Fall of 2025 and look forward to welcoming our new cohort of students in the Fall of 2026. Stay tuned to this page as we announce application instructions, degree requirements, course offerings, and funding.
