We have reimagined the graduate program in African American and African Studies (AAAS) at MSU. Here, we commit to center joy in graduate education!

Our work is informed by an expectation that the work of Black Studies is significant and meaningful to each student. The graduate programs in AAAS offer exclusive advanced study in Black Feminisms, Genders, and Sexualities Studies. Students will work with vanguard artist-scholars who are committed to forwarding the power and scope of Black lives, worlds, and world building. The graduate programs have three concentrations of study: Black Cultures and Institutions, Black Girlhood Studies, and Black Speculative Ecologies. We support learners as knowledge producers and community builders who can show up wholly and authentically in their respective intellectual leadership journeys. The graduate programs in AAAS are guided and informed by the values of Collectivity, Wellness, Play, Desire, and Love.

We will begin accepting applications for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy degree program in the Fall of 2025 and look forward to welcoming our new cohort of students in the Fall of 2026.
