The Department of African American and African Studies is excited to bring back Activating Wellness Week – an initiative created in 2022 by AAAS advisors. Activating Wellness is an intentional and practical extension of AAAS value of moving beyond survival and into wellness. During this week we take time to pause and center wellness together. Students, faculty, and healers have been invited to lead various sessions. All events will be held in North Kedzie N219.
On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, session Serenity in Sound: A Healing Bath for Mind, Body, and Spirit is being led by Nila Ellison. Drop in at any time during the session to enter a state of calm and peace with healing vibrational frequencies. This event will be from 10:30-12:30p. Bring a yoga mat, a pillow and blanket if desired, and get comfortable!
On the same day, Angie Melissa González Chaverra will lead Embracing Our Freedom: The Power of Joy and Movement in Black Lives. Attendees will learn how to incorporate dance and movement into their regular wellness practice. Her workshop will be from 1:30-3:00p. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing and bring water!
Angie Melissa will return Thursday, October 24, 2024 with Rhythms of Resistance: Afro Colombian Dance for Wellness. She will explore how dance and movement hold historical and ancestral memory, cultural preservation, grassroots organizing, and social justice. This will be from 10:30-12:30p. Again, wear comfortable shoes and clothing, bring water, and get ready to sweat!
We’re excited to share our value of wellness and well-being with our students, campus, and community!
